Kia ora Whanau,
Camp is almost upon us and we are in full swing. We are aiming to have a folder on the Blog with all the notices that have been handed out. As I am a new Blogger this has stretched my abilities and I am on a fast learning curve. In the mean time I have copied the gear list below. There will be more information to come soon. You Cubed Maths
You Cubed Maths Week of Inspirational Maths
Whanau Paikea and Tahu Potiki have been exploring mathematical concepts through Standford University's You Cubed Math Week of Maths. Each day we watch an inspirational video clip from Jo Boaler and her team.
In our first session Whanau Paikea had a huge success with the activity Four 4's. In this activity we had to use four 4's to represent every number from 1 - 20. Some of the numbers were very hard to work out but once we came together and shared our ideas from the workshop groups we were able to complete the task.
You were able to use an combinations of operations . Answers did not have to follow BEDMAS rules as we were working through them orally but the next step would be to make sure they follow the mathematical rules. If you are interested in any of the You Cubed Math activities follow the link to the You Cubed Website at You Cubed Math

Kia ora koutou and a warm welcome to our Year 5 students and those of you
who are new to Avonhead this year. A warm welcome also to all your
family/whānau. We hope you feel at home within our team.
We welcome Mrs Danielle Lane, an excellent experienced teacher from
Lyttelton Primary and Miss Amelia Page, a beginning teacher with a wealth
of new ideas, talents and knowledge. Mrs Hayley Ellison, who is already part
of our Avonhead whānau, will release Amelia (every Wednesday) and Tim
(every second Tuesday). Hayley is a real asset to our team and we are really
looking forward to having her in this new role as well as being a release teacher
for the other teachers in the team throughout the year.

This is where we all are:
Mrs Robinson - Room 17,
Miss Page - Room 18,
Mrs Rule - Room 19,
Miss de Beus - Room 20,
Mrs Lane - Room 21, and
Mr Weusten - Room 22.
Mrs Robinson - Room 17,
Miss Page - Room 18,
Mrs Rule - Room 19,
Miss de Beus - Room 20,
Mrs Lane - Room 21, and
Mr Weusten - Room 22.
During the year students will be working with a range of teachers.
We believe that to provide our students with rich programmes, students
are best to be grouped flexibly. We will spend the first 4 weeks within our
‘home room classes’ to get to know one another socially and academically.
Students within Mr Weusten, Mrs Lane and Miss de Beus’ classes will be
clustered into one whānau group (Paikea) and students within Mrs Robinson,
Mrs Rule and Miss Page’s classes will be in another whānau group
(Tahu Pōtiki) for the majority of our core protected time (literacy and maths).
This is an area that we are looking forward to developing within our
collaborative, flexible learning programmes.
